Depression

January 26, 2017

Sean Michael, 2014

The walls are made of mirrors,
so that no matter which way I turn…
There’s a painting of a clown that looks a lot like me.
Wait, that’s just my reflection.
There’s a projector that plays back memories,
and I can’t figure out how to turn the damn thing off.
There’s a speaker in the ceiling that keeps repeating incomplete
sentences.
I hear this and that and none of it seems to make any sense.
Then I realize it’s my own voice.
I try to remember a time when I was strong.
Then I try to figure out where I went wrong.
I’ve got to find a way out of here.
I call this place the torture chamber.
This corner in my mind where lies are stacked ceiling high
beside regret and a bunch of other shit I can’t even recognize.
I’ve got to find a way out of here…

  1. My adult daughter lives with severe, treatment-resistant depression. This comes close to what she describes. An excellent write.

    • I’m sorry to hear this. My diagnosis is similar, severe-depression-recurring. I’ve written a lot about it, particularly in poetry. I find reading and writing to be more therapeutic than many other things. My book, Stygian, contains a lot of this poetry. The website mentioned above, FindYour Words.org is designed to help people express their depression.

  7. walls inside the walls inside the walls….with voices stacked within. It is so very hard to fight depression within virual walls we build ourselves….even more so while living within real punishing/supposed-to-be-rehabilitating walls. Many are with you Sean…knowing your value. Know that yourself and reach deep within to know your mind, your writing, take you outside to breathe.

    • Thank you for your comment. Writing poetry is the way I’ve dealt with many depressions. Have you had to deal with this as well? What helps you?
